Many species are known to remove harmful toxins from our air and reduce levels of carbon dioxide. Air purifying plants such as the Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) or the Snake Plant (Sanseveria) will detoxify our homes, removing harmful formaldehyde, benzenes and many other pollutants commonly found in the home and office. The driving idea was perhaps plants absorb more than just carbon dioxide—that they could absorb other air polluting gases as well, like volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Technically this is true. But the rate at which houseplants remove VOCs from the air isn't enough to earn them the title of air purifying devices.
