SeetharaRaman House Project Name: Seetharaman House Location: Chennai Architectural Firm: Benny Kuriakose & Associates @bennykuriakose_associates The Seetharaman house was designed by Benny Kuriakose and Associates and is a refuge from the unforgiving heat and dismal tones of Chennai city by honouring the client's requirements at every turn. The central objective when designing the house is to create a spacious, bright, pleasant, and easy-to-maintain traditional Kerala style house using natural materials. The house is in the shape of the Tamil alphabet “Pa”, and all the living spaces overlook the green courtyard. Due to proximity to the seaside and to mitigate heat, the sloping roof is built of timber and Mangalore tiles with large overhangs shading the walls. Set within a plot of 7.5 cents, the house has been set in a corner of the plot giving maximum space for front and side yard for utility. A small and budget friendly house, with larger living spaces, a small courtyard and smaller private spaces. The kitchen was kept semi-open, and in a way that it is connected to all the living spaces. The central area is vertically connected to the first floor, for the living spaces in both floors to be lively and for the passive climate response purposes. After that, we located the remaining requirements and in-between spaces were created as court yards, which allowed cross ventilation to all the areas.
