The radio house
The shell of an old radio found in the backyard of the office was found and buffed by @⁨MANSOOR MALAYSIA⁩, came to real play when we thought of a facade design for this residence at tirur. The single storey residence with mezzanine floor in the living room, adds up to the odd overall exterior height that neither single or double storey boasts.

The making of the physical model was originally a leisure group activity we spanned on our free time over a week period. The outcome as our first attempt using board material and glue, whips up the work to set out such tangible simulations on further projects.

The house was planned as a retirement home, for a couple who was settled in Mumbai, on planning to spend rest of their lives back at their hometown in Kerala. Set within a plot of 7.5 cents, the house has been set in a corner of the plot giving maximum space for front and side yard for utility. A small and budget friendly house, with larger living spaces, a small courtyard and smaller private spaces. The kitchen was kept semi-open, and in a way that it is connected to all the living spaces. The central area is vertically connected to the first floor, for the living spaces in both floors to be lively and for the passive climate response purposes. The courtyard being also a small living area, brings in pleasant eastern light and some greens into the house which the couple might enjoy a lot more in their old ages.

Mirrors are a commodity seen in every household. The concept of an affordable house which is a dream for the common man in India is emphasized through the adaptive reuse of discarded old mirror pieces collected by the owner which adorns the walls of the house as decorative features. Adding to this, the interiors enriched with an interplay of light, shadow and reflections makes it no less than a “house of mirrors”.

The house is seated in a plot of 5 cents within the city limits in a dense residential area in Kerala, India. The major challenge was to fit all the requirements appealing to a modern-day family of four within the availa
