The 58-year-old actor Brad Pitt recently purchased the D. L. James House in Monterey County’s Carmel neighbourhood, adding another important real estate treasure to his portfolio that he indicated may be his new bachelor pad.
Brad Pitt’s Monterey County property characteristics report depicts a 2.51-acre parcel of land with two homes, the largest of which is a 3,793-square-foot building with three bedrooms and four baths built in 1914.
It is based on a second 695-square-foot building erected in 1940 with one bedroom and one bathroom. The county document also lists five fireplaces, a 550-square-foot greenhouse, a 504-square-foot garage, and a 588-square-foot basement as features.
No stranger to the area, Brad Pitt already has a USD$5 million beach house in Goleta, California, which he purchased in 2000 while married to Jennifer Aniston.

The mansion is named for American novelist D.L. James, who commissioned Charles Greene to construct it. The home, called Seaward, has an exterior of golden granite mined from nearby Yankee Point, giving the structure the appearance of erupting from the cliff where it rests. The masonry on the Craftsman-style mansion was reported to be inspired by the ruins of Tintagel in England.
The home, which is located metres from the beach, has a wooden aesthetic and is made of locally mined sandstone and granite. It has arched windows, bricks hand-picked by architect Charles Greene, and a tiled Mediterranean-style roof. Mr Greene “raised up the exterior walls so they appear to be sprouting out of the cliffs,” according to The Gamble House, an organisation dedicated to the architect’s work.
Carmel-by-the-Sea has long drawn Hollywood celebrities about 100 miles south of San Francisco. Betty White had a beachfront house in Carmel until her death in 2021. Clint Eastwood was elected mayor by a landslide in 1986 and served for two years. The 92-year-old actor still lives in the neighbourhood.
The D.L. James House is the most recent addition to Brad’s remarkable real estate portfolio. The Oscar winner has held homes in Hollywood, Mallorca, New York City, New Orleans, and the south of France, where he briefly shared Château Miraval with his ex Angelina Jolie.
Brad, who has a passion for architecture and design, collaborated on a series with furniture manufacturer Frank Pollaro in 2012 and voiced a documentary on Frank Lloyd Wright in 2020. The interior of the mansion was photographed in 1997, almost 25 years before Pitt bought it, and it had eye-catching archways, light wood doors, large mirrors set into the walls, marble fireplaces, and other rustic fixtures.
Brad Pitt had possessed a spectacular midcentury modern mansion above Malibu’s Encinal Bluffs, which he sold in 2012 to Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi, who soon flipped it to its present owner, Victoria Jackson, the wife of infomercial entrepreneur Bill Guthy.
