4 Sustainable Furniture Designs To Make Your Home Eco-Friendly

Here are four sustainable products, including recycled-material furniture, wood from sustainably managed forests, and reusable parts. Designers and companies are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of the things they produce.

The focus is turning from the materials and manufacturing processes utilised to the lifespan of things, with designers and businesses thinking about how products may be more easily maintained to extend their life in an effort to minimise emissions and alleviate environmental harm. The circular economy, which many firms are attempting to adopt, is based on two core principles: recycling resources to reduce waste and extending the useful life of products.

From tabletops made from discarded yoghurt pots to outdoor seating made from used beer kegs, here’s a selection of the latest sustainable and eco-friendly products

1. New Modern Table System by Tiptoe

The French furniture company Tiptoe designed a sustainable New Modern modular table system, which features steel leg sections in the trestle style that can be combined with various tabletops.

The tables are constructed using recyclable or recycled materials that have been ethically sourced; their tabletops are composed of either FSC-certified pinewood or recycled plastic that is terrazzo-style and created from used yoghurt containers.

The table’s individual parts are all easily replaceable or repairable. To cut down on plastic waste and transportation-related carbon emissions, the tables are also packaged in a paper that is 80% recyclable.

2. Total Modular Sofas by Part & Whole

A modular sofa system that may be arranged in various ways was created by Canadian design firm Part & Whole. The seating can be combined to make larger corner couches, straight-back sofas, or independent chairs.

One of the tenets of the circular economy is that products should be made to last as long as possible, and the Total couch adheres to this tenet. Every component is also removable, repairable or replaceable, helping to reduce waste and make it sustainable while extending the product’s lifespan.

3. Sling Lounge Chair by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin for Takt

Sling Lounge Chair is an EU Ecolabel-certified and sustainable reclining lounge chair designed by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of the London studio Industrial Facility for Danish furniture maker Takt.

The chair’s structure is made of FSC-certified oak, and the draped fabric seat is created in Europe from flax plant fibres. The fabric’s manufacture utilises less water than most other methods of fabric production.

Each component of the chair, which is assembled with only four screws, may be readily replaced when worn or old. The chair is flat packaged into hardwood components to reduce CO2 emissions during transportation.

4. Costume Sofa System by Stefan Diez for Magis

Stefan Diez, a German designer, devised the Costume modular sofa system, which is designed to be readily disassembled, repurposed, and cleaned.

Diez created the sofa to challenge traditional sofa design, which makes it impossible to separate different components and prohibits them from being recycled or repaired. Diez instead developed a new construction method that prevents the constituent elements from becoming permanently fused together, allowing the sofa to be completely disassembled or replaced.

The structure of the sofa is made of polyethylene that has been recycled from industrial waste and can be recycled again, while the textile cover is washable and replaceable.
