The Stranger Things actress Winona Ryder turned 51 years old today!
Winona Ryder is thought to own a prominently located Mediterranean villa in Los Angeles’ celeb-packed Outpost Estates neighbourhood, in the foothills above Hollywood, and Architectural Digest recently featured her homes in New York City, a sophisticated apartment with 18-foot-high ceilings in a landmarked downtown building, and in Beverly Hills, a modestly sized 1920s Mediterranean bungalow she restored to its original state with the savvy help of her good friend.
Rich and famous people are notorious for having itchy real estate feet, buying and selling multimillion-dollar homes with the same ease and zeal that ordinary people would buy a new pair of shoes or replace the baking soda box in the fridge. One notable exception, at least in San Francisco, is Hollywood veteran Winona Ryder, who has lived in the city’s affluent Cow Hollow neighbourhood for the past 25 years.
The Golden Globe winner paid $1,300,000 for her San Francisco home in 1995. Winona Ryder’s long-term residence was built on one of Cow Hollow’s most coveted blocks. The entryway boasts modern upgrades with high ceilings and moulding. The three-bedroom, three-bath Victorian-style home has been beautifully preserved and tastefully updated with modern detail.
A gated courtyard entrance leads around to Winona Ryder’s house side, where a cherry-red front door opens to a foyer with original inlaid hardwood floors, leaded glass windows, and a decoratively spindled switchback staircase. A formal sitting room facing the street has more leaded glass windows and a rather dull traditional fireplace with fluted pilaster accents, while an informal sitting room has an almost identical fireplace. The sunlit formal living room has a fireplace, and several large windows, and opens onto a massive view deck that overlooks the lush outdoor property.
The adjoining dining area opens onto a spacious deck with a lovely tree-framed view of the bay toward Angel Island State Park, and the not-particularly-large but the carefully arranged kitchen is lavishly outfitted with pale-grey quartz counters and fancy up-to-date designer appliances. The large windows in the dining room, which is adjacent to the kitchen and living room, provide plenty of natural light. The San Francisco home of Winona Ryder is ideal for entertaining because it has both indoor and outdoor space for small gatherings or large celebrations.
Though there are three bedrooms on the upper level, floor plans show that one of them has a spacious vintage-style private bath, while the other two easily function as a grand suite that includes a shared entry vestibule off of which opens a sizable walk-in closet and another vintage-style bath. The larger of the suite’s two rooms has a fireplace, similar to those found in a French chateau, and both have glass sliders that open to the same narrow balcony with views of the bay and two of the city’s most famous landmarks, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island.
The basement-like lower level has a laundry room and a completed bonus area with a bathroom, in addition to a single-car garage. And, contrary to popular belief, the balcony outside the dining room features steps leading down to a spacious rear that includes a huge brick terrace and a little deck concealed among trees and greenery.
