5 Homes With French Door Design

This article featuring 5 homes with French doors includes a home with terrazzo interiors and an apartment that was refurbished to accommodate library bookcases throughout its walls.

French doors are a pair of doors that open out to outdoor spaces and include glass panes that extend the height of the doors.

Because of its primary glass composition, the doors are frequently utilised as outside doors, allowing light into the interior. However, French doors may also be utilised in interiors to separate and partition areas without sacrificing light.

The residential projects shown here demonstrate how French doors may be used and incorporated into house restorations, additions, and newbuilds.

Dominic McKenzie Architects designed this brick expansion in the London district of Islington, drawing inspiration from tall buildings in rural Italy. Chevron flooring brings attention to black, glass-panelled French doors that lead to a subterranean garden and are placed beneath a rectangular skylight.

The new construction replaces an expansion that was erected in the 1980s but was inadequately insulated and housed the home’s lone bathroom inconveniently.

At this top-floor apartment in one of Shanghai’s first high-rise residential buildings, a white modular sofa was angled toward white French doors.

The flat was refurbished by Atelier Tao+C to make the study the main centre of the home. Floor-to-ceiling smoked wood bookcases were placed around the whole flat, framing white-painted French doors leading to an L-shaped balcony.

Expanses of the panelled glass cover the walls of this California mansion built by US firm Studio Schicketanz. The single-story residence and guest house were built around a manicured courtyard.

The use of huge French doors that allow relaxing views out to the centre courtyard merges indoor and outdoor spaces. Throughout the interior, textural materials were employed.

4. Casa Mami, US, by Working Holiday Studio

The architecture of this vacation home in the California desert was inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian styles, as well as the work of architect Luis Barragán.

From within the paired back interior, French doors frame the desert surroundings, which holds a sculptural Cylinder Back Armchair by Los Angeles-based furniture firm Waka Waka.

5. Greenwood Road, UK, by Kilburn Nightingale

Ben Kilburn, an architect, restored his own Victorian home in Hackney, London, adding a double-height library beside lengths of pale-wood-lined windows that flow out to the yard.

With a mezzanine-style railing positioned on the floor above, the double-height area is visually connected to both the home’s outside space and the living room. The whole rear brick bulk is covered in floor-to-ceiling glass, including French doors.
