At the wall of a cantilever beam, the bending moment equals the moment reaction. At the free end, the bending moment is zero. Maximum BM occurs at support for cantilever beam and it reduces to zero towards the free end. The depth of beam is directly proportional to the moment carrying capacity so as the BM reduces to nil towards the free end a tapered depth may be adopted to achieve economy by saving concrete.
