This is Sameer’s house in Mullanpara, Malappuram, which was built overcoming the challenge of a narrow plot. The one-story house is built according to the likes of landlord, which includes living, dining, two bedrooms, and a kitchen. The house is spacious and comfortable; rooms are well ventilated and well-lit. The 1000-square-foot house is built in a minimalist style. The house was constructed for Rs 27 lakhs on a plot that was more difficult than the budget. Navas of Lesara Designers in Manjeri built the house.
The seven-cent plot, which is narrow and stretching backwards, is more challenging than the budget. Although it is a rectangular plot, it is not wide enough. Meanwhile, Nawaz, a relative and interior designer, was assigned to do the construction. That meeting revived the idea of a new way of housing in a contemporary style.
The exterior is reminiscent of a traditional style. Mustard yellow was used in Elevation to distinguish it from off white. The terracotta finish cladding also adds elegance to the exterior. What makes it unique is that it looks like a two storied house though it is a single storied. The seating area provided above helps with this outlook.
The porch was a little further away from the house but provided a landscape along to connect with the house. The gate and wall are matching with the overall design. The pillars at the entrance to the seating area catch everyone’s attention. The natural stone cladding given to the triangular pillars gives a rough feel. Vitrified tile and granite were chosen for the flooring in the truss-worked seating area.
The spacious interior welcomes you inside. Living and dining are arranged in L-shape. The TV unit was set up in wall so that it could be seen from both sides. The furnishing is done with a contrasting electric blue colour. Gypsum work is done on the ceiling, the walls are decorated with attractive wallpapers and matte wood finish is done on the floor.
The stairway is near the dining area. The highlight here is the olive green colour. The landing area is designed in such a way that the natural light will enter the home through the large opening.
Bedrooms are designed to be spacious. False ceiling has been with gypsum-glass over the bed space. The house has a total of two bedrooms. The bathroom is provided only in the master bedroom. The house is designed in such a way that two bedrooms can be combined when required.
The kitchen is designed in a simple old fashioned way .The countertop is spread with granite and kitchen cabinets are made with plywood.
More windows were provided to allow air circulation and light to enter the house. Cross ventilation was also ensured. Truss work is done near to the stair area for better ventilation inside the house. By using glass tile on the ceiling the day time energy consumption can be reduced.
